Wealdstone Youth Workshop

1519130685-03-wyw-06.jpg

Wealdstone Youth Workshop

Is a public design project with a group of 17 and 18-year olds in Wealdstone, Harrow, north-west London, who were brought together by regeneration agency Spacemakers to design and make public furniture for use across their community. Over the last nine months, the youth – Esther Calinawan, Kayleigh Littlemore, Leo Harrison, Marina Marbella, Marius Dinu and Tanya Galia – have been led through a programme of workshops by us to create, prototype and test a design.

Wealdstone Youth Workshop

The Wealdstone Leg is their response: a modular furniture component, manufactured in England, which has been used to create a range of stools, benches and chairs for use at temporary events in the forthcoming Wealdstone Square.

The Wealdstone Leg is also available to buy, and use as you wish: whether as a leg, an arm, a bracket or a thing. All proceeds go back into the project, with each of the youth receiving royalties from the sales, along with a stipend for taking part.

The project aims to get young people inside the process of regenerating their community; give them a paid route into an industry that doesn’t currently exist in the area; and help to alter perceptions in the community, of both young people and Wealdstone itself.

Wealdstone Youth Workshop is part of a wider project by Harrow Council to create Wealdstone Square – a new public space at the centre of Wealdstone that can bring the community together. The overall project is led by architecture and urbanism practice We Made That, with graphic design by Europa.

Speckled Glass - Good Thing

Good Thing asked us to design a set of glasses that stack.
1492780852-speckled-glass-pitcher-blue.jpg

Speckled Glass - Good Thing

They also asked for a pitcher to match.
1492782403-speckled-glass-glass-set-bases.jpg

Speckled Glass - Good Thing

We wanted to be clear this is an industrially produced item and is all made by hand, each piece is pressed on to fragments of coloured glass whilst molten hot and melted in by skilled lampworkers, the way that the glass picks up is different each time, leaving a slightly raised texture, producing a speckle.
1492780725-speckled-glass-glass-set-water.jpg

Speckled Glass - Good Thing

The shoulder that allows each glass to stack is formed by hand and mouth blowing.

Speckled Glass - Good Thing

The Pitcher is hand formed in the same way and has a tubular glass handle.
1492782403-speckled-glass-glass-set-diagonal.jpg

Speckled Glass - Good Thing

All Speckled Glass is made from borosilicate which is a very stable glass, it is safe to use with hot and cold beverages.

Newton's Bucket

In 1689 Isaac Newton conducted an experiment where he hung by a rope a bucket filled with water. The rope is twisted up tightly on itself and then the bucket is released beginning to spin rapidly.
1430751509-silostudio-newtonbucket-03.jpg

Newton's Bucket

Here Newton’s description of what happens: “The surface of the water will at first be flat, as before the bucket began to move; but after that, the bucket by gradually communicating its motion to the water, will make it begin to revolve, and recede little by little from the centre, and ascend up the sides of the bucket, forming itself into a concave figure.”
1430751497-silostudio-newtonbucket-01.jpg

Newton's Bucket

Inspired by this experiment we have exchanged the rope for a turntable, the bucket for a hollow hemisphere and water for non-toxic resin to create a series of bowls that capture this moment in time, which will always make each piece unique.
1431010857-silostudio-newtonbucket-06.jpg

Newton's Bucket

The outside shape of the bowl is determined by the “bucket”, in this case a hemisphere, the inside is a perfect parabola created by the dual effect of gravity and inertia.
1430751522-silostudio-newtonbucket-05.jpg

Newton's Bucket

We use different colours of resin to show the way the liquid moves whilst travelling through inertia. We have also created tools to disrupt the flow of the material and highlight the process.

working in collaboration with Riess an enamelware manufacturer in Austria, the project was commissioned by Vienna Design Week for an ongoing Initiative called Passionswege
1431017921-silostudio-eindruck-09.jpg

Eindruck

Passionswege is a project that partners designers and artists with manufacturers that have a presence in Vienna. We were very happy to be teamed with Riess that have a long history of producing high-quality enamel.
1431015943-silostudio-eindruck-07.jpg

Eindruck

Our aim was to develop something new using the tools that were available in the Riess factory, at Silo we like to introduce randomness, we find beauty in when the material or technique show how they work in a less orderd way.
